This and other places of interest are located in the huge area of the citadel high above the town. You can enter this mosque - as well as that of the mosque of Al Azhar and of Ibn Tulun - without being a Moslem. It is admirable and impressive. There is an open air cafe from which you have a good view all over Cairo.

Throw yourself into the milling crowd of the Friday market. In an immense maze of narrow lanes are offered sheep, geese, goats i.e. as well as kitsch, junk, old things with or without value. If you love browsing you’ll enjoy this. The haggling is not for the faint-hearted!

Full day excursions

Full day excursions where it is sometimes advisable to rent a taxi:
An all-time favorite is the Egyptian National Museum with treasures of thousands of years of Pharaonic history. Its location in Midan el Tahrir is just on the subway line from Maadi to El Marg.

Another must-see: the pyramids area in Gizeh with the pyramid of Cheops, the sun boat and the Sphinx with all the smaller pyramids surrounding them. Make sure you have read up in advance for this trip.
Horseback riding on thoroughbred Arabian horses. According your physical condition you can even make it a full day trip to Saqqara.

The vast necropolis of Saqqara is the most important cemetery of ancient Egypt. In this extensive area lies the well known step pyramid of Djoser. Some tombs are open for visitors. The well-preserved reliefs and drawings are at the height of Pharaonic art.
How about a change? Swimming in the Red Sea? It is only a 2 two hours ride from Maadi to Ain el Sukhna, or six hours to Hurghada.

All Wednesdays and Fridays there is a camel market 30 kms north of Cairo. It took 40 days for hundreds of camels to cross the desert from Sudan to the Egyptian borders..
Strolling through the old parts of Cairo you find yourself in the Khan El Khalili bazaar. Wow! It is unbelievable! You may well spend a whole day or more in this oriental shopper’s heaven.

Another quarter near the bazaar is that of the „tentmakers“. They create and produce all kinds of patchwork. Their creations are interesting and affordable souvenirs.

A trip to the oasis of Fayoum with its salty lake and its famous water wheels takes a whole day.
Beside the deserts and the green delta there are „wadis“. In the protected area of Wadi Degla near Maadi you can hike and climb. It has a scope of 30 kilometers.
